You were warned.
You were warned by the pundits, warned by the media, warned by the establishment, and you were warned by me. The sad thing is that the warning signs were so obvious, yet you ignored them despite their nature.
Donald Trump, is, was, and always will be a hot mess.
You wanted an outsider? Well, you got one. He's so outside of the mainstream of AMERICA, that he's supported by no more than 40% of the electorate, and THAT'S on a good day! But here's the thing: outsiders are fun to watch, but outsiders NEVER get elected. That's because at some point, the electorate wises up just before they enter the voting booth and finds a bit of responsibility.
Historians will look back on the 2016 election and see that the GOP was handed the weakest opposing presidential candidate in recent memory. An open Oval Office with no incumbent running, an economy still in shambles after the worst recession in American history, a foreign policy virtually rudderless and ineffective, and a candidate who is the most dishonest and corrupt in American history.
They were practically handed the keys to the White House.
And then the GOP found a home for Donald Trump. Big mistake.
You allowed yourselves to be smitten with a braggart; a crude, vulgar, ultimately small man with a huge ego.
Oh, it's not officially over. Hillary could still be caught in bed with a live girl or a dead boy, which might just be enough for the fawning media myrmidons to finally turn on her, but I wouldn't bet on it.
But back to the warnings. Virtually every GOP candidate when polled head-to-head against Hillary Clinton during the primaries was beating her - except Donald Trump. Marco Rubio was the best chance head-to-head according to the polls (as much as 10 points), but the GOP outsiders wrongly painted him as supporting amnesty (he didn't). John Kasich was completely mainstream, and up by 5 points. Heck, even a creepy used-car salesman type like Ted Cruz was polling ahead of Hillary Clinton.
And yet you allowed the outsiders to choose Trump. You had the power and the duty to throw a monkey wrench into the convention and stop this train wreck, but as usual, you chickened out. And that lack of spine is going to cost you.
It's going to cost you the White House. It's going to cost you the Senate. And it may, despite massive gerrymandering in place to ensure a GOP majority through 2020, cost you the House, potentially bringing back the most disgusting and divisive Speaker to ever wield the gavel - Nancy Pelosi. And if that happens, the damage to this country will be irreparable, if we haven't already got there.
If there is any silver lining to this fiasco, we may well finally see the ascendancy of a viable third party which can challenge the dangerous two-party monopoly we've had for so long.
But the GOP had better get their act together pretty quickly after this election debacle, or they will be wandering in the wilderness for at least the next decade.
Hi! I'm Dave Richard, your host. I hope you enjoy your visit. We'll be talking about current events, politics, the occasional sports (I'm a HUGE New England Patriots fan, so get over it), and some "Get off my lawn!" issues.
