From Robert Reich: (the only quote he's ever made worth repeating)
" Politics is a Greek word derived from two different words; "poli" meaning - many, and "tics" meaning - blood sucking pests"
Truer words were never spoken.
Partisanship has never been this destructive in American politics. And both sides are guilty of it to some degree.
The House and Senate recently proposed a $1.1 billion program to study and combat the Zika virus, which could pose long-term health problems for humans. Now, to you and me, a billion dollars is a LOT of money, but apparently not for Senate Democrats. Either because they didn't want to give Republicans a campaign issue to run on in November, or because there is literally no amount of money too large to take from some Americans to give to others, or maybe because they simply wanted a full loaf when half would do, they blocked passage of the bill. Not one stinkin' Democrat voted for the bill. Oh, and the most incompetent President in the history of our Republic promised to veto it if it did pass.
So nobody gets any money to study and combat the Zika virus. Way to go, Washington!
Now, I usually don't wish ill on others, but I'm at the end of my patience with these people. Maybe if that pesky virus were to infect one of their daughters while bringing forth a new grandchild, they might see the error of their ways. Karma is a bitch.
And why is Hillary Clinton on the campaign trail and not in jail somewhere awaiting trial?
It is obvious to anyone with two working brain cells that she deliberately violated national security procedures in setting up a private server outside of the government firewall, and instructed her staff to remove classifications from documents sent to her in an attempt to keep her actions as Secretary of State secret from public scrutiny. If Obama wasn't so intent on making sure that his potential successor wasn't under indictment while campaigning to replace him, she'd already have been charged and her security clearance would have been stripped away.
Imagine a President who can't be briefed on national security issues.
Oh, and let's take a look at the joint committee investigating the Benghazi incompetence. Democrats INSISTED that they should be on it, even though they thought it was a farce. Apparently, the only reason they wanted to be on it was to issue a separate "report" claiming "Nothing to see here - move along". Based on previous committee hearings, everybody already knew how incompetent Hillary Clinton was in running the State Dept., but now we know just how criminally incompetent she was.
Ignoring repeated requests to bolster security at the Benghazi compound. Allowing her ambassador to travel to that same unsecured compound. Taking herself out of the loop when things went sour, leaving 4 Americans to die when help was not far away. And finally, covering up her incompetence by trying to blame some little-watched video for sparking what was concluded to be a planned terrorist attack - not a spontaneous demonstration which got out of hand.
Anyone else would have been fired. She's looking for a promotion.
Add to that a sitting American President speaking to foreign legislatures overseas, and making them campaign speeches rather than policy speeches, and you have an embarrassment of partisanship when patriotism and leadership are called for. The only downside in Barack Obama leaving the presidency next year is that there is some moronic Democrat president in our future who will try to nominate that Constitutional idiot to the Supreme Court.
Heaven help us if that should ever happen.
So many opinions - so much wrong thinking.
Liberals trying to blame conservatives, conservatives trying to blame liberals.
Both are to blame.
The only thing that shouldn't be blamed are the guns that were used. It's the people, policies, programs and politicians who should shoulder the blame here.
First, let's cover the ridiculous political posturing from both sides in attempting to label this attack. Conservatives, including that useless piece of Congressional terror-maven Rep. Peter King, R-"They attacked my city 15 years ago!", are quick to insist that no one should be calling this a hate crime, even though that wonderful religion of peace - Islam - written and adopted by human degenerates who loathe homosexuals even more than the troglodytes of the other religion of love and tolerance - Christianity - were behind this attack. But to Peter King and others, there is more political capital in making sure that everyone knows that Orlando was a terrorist act, not a hate crime.
On the other hand, the left has been quick to jump on the gay aspect of this attack, hesitant to label it terrorism because their guy is in power and their narrative and cause is better advanced by labeling it a hate crime. They can't be seen as being successful in their policies against ISIS (do have have any policies against ISIS?) if ISIS is successfully attacking our homeland.
So in the binary world of the left it's a hate crime, and on the right it's an act of terror.
Neither of the sides comprising these paragons of political stupidity are intelligent enough or honest enough to admit that it can be both hate and terror.
But this is once again a failure of GOVERNMENT, and the last thing anyone in government wants you to know is just how badly it has failed. Let's face it; this guy was under investigation by Obama's FBI not once, but TWICE for his ties to radical Islamists, and yet, because of the laws on our books that CONSERVATIVES refuse to address, he was not prohibited from legally purchasing guns. Government has established an official terrorism "watch list", but while it can be relatively easy to get on this list, there is no specific procedure by which someone who may have been wrongly put on the list can be taken off of it. So when the left calls for denying gun permits and sales to people on a watch list that has virtually no rules attached to it, the right is understandably skeptical that it could be abused by an administration who wants to keep guns out of the hands of anybody with which they do not agree.
Both sides have to give, and more importantly, give up once they come to an agreement on this, because the biggest argument against working with the left on guns is their never-ending quest to take all guns away from law-abiding Americans. It's the old "give an inch and we'll take a mile" syndrome that radicals like to practice. Liberals don't like to have anyone but the State be involved with securing a free State. That's the part of the Second Amendment that scares the bejeesus out of them; that someone would actually be better at securing their own freedom than relying on government to do so - no matter how badly government might be at the practice.
Common-sense protocols must be put in place to keep guns out of the hands of terrorists and those with mental disorders. On the terrorism front, specific rules have to be put in place to get you on the watch list, and procedures need to be established so that you can get off of it in case of an error. The FBI's hands are tied as it currently stands. We have to stop being afraid of possibly insulting someone due to their religious affiliation, and remember that the first role of government is the security of the United States.
And I have no problem with requiring a doctor's note regarding your mental state of mind before obtaining a gun permit. This puts more of an onus on the health care professional to properly evaluate your mental health, but it needs to be done. If cleared, go for it. If not, a requirement for a majority of three independently chosen doctors would be needed to deny you that permit - with an appeals process in place to evaluate the diagnosis further if denied.
And then stop.
Stop trying to legislate certain types of guns out of existence. Stop trying to limit the number of rounds in a clip. Stop the death-enabling establishment of "gun-free zones", where sheep are allowed to gather in peaceful bliss just before the wolves come to slaughter them. To see how unsuccessful "gun-free zones" have been, you only need to look at every mass killing in America by guns to see that every one of them has occurred in a so-called "gun-free zone".
If that's not the poster child for government policy failure, I don't know what is.
It's time for both sides to grow up and be the adults they claim to be.
Hi! I'm Dave Richard, your host. I hope you enjoy your visit. We'll be talking about current events, politics, the occasional sports (I'm a HUGE New England Patriots fan, so get over it), and some "Get off my lawn!" issues.
